Have you ever truly asked the question, "Why do I exist?" "Why am I here?" "Why was I born?" It must be a question, or questions, that cross everyone's mind at one time or another.
When I was a child growing up back in Iowa, I can remember attending a summer Bible class that addressed just such a question, or questions. It was during my preteen years and I probably had not even faced the wonder of existence yet.
When I enlisted, the military required us to attend classes during basic training over the same topic. Who am I? Who are they? Why am I here? I am not sure that I had faced the uncertainty of life even then.
When do we ask the purpose for our being? Is it in our youth? Or is it when we are in mid-life with a family? Maybe, is it when we are entering our waning years and are looking back? Let's look at God's Word, the only source and norm for answers about life.
"It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ … He had His eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone" (Ephesians 1:11).
This August, on Thursday evenings, we are going to address the purpose for our being based on God's Word and guided by Rick Warren's book, The Purpose Driven Life. We will seek an answer to the question, "What on earth am I here for?" Will you come and be a part? You are invited for a time of fellowship and study! A few copies of Warren's book are still available from the church office for the cost of $11 dollars. That's a better price than even Wal-Mart can offer!
We will gather together for a potluck supper at 6 p.m. on Thursday evenings. Cleanup will be done and class begun by 6:45 p.m. Our goal is to finish by 8 p.m. each evening. The study will conclude in just six weeks, 40 days. Class number one is scheduled for August 4, my birthday! The last class will be held on the second Thursday in September. This is an opportunity you do not want to miss!
We are not an accident! Even before the universe was created, God had us in mind, and He planned each of us for His purpose. Scripture teaches that He knew us before we were created in our mother's womb! Even then He called us by our name and claimed us as His own! His purposes for our life will extend far beyond the few years we will spend on this tiny blue planet. After all, we were made to last forever!
This six week study will help us understand why we are alive and God's plan for us-both here and now, and for eternity. Don't waste the last month of summer! Join your sisters and brothers in Christ! Use this opportunity to invite a loved one or friend to come on the journey too!
What on earth are we here for? We were planned for God's pleasure. We were formed for God's family. We were created to become like Christ. We were shaped for serving God. We were made for a mission. August 2005 will be a time of discovery! You must join in this 40-day spiritual journey! You will want to bring along someone, anyone, you care for! Remember God's Word: "Everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him" (Colossians 1:16b). So, what's your purpose? Amen!
